Saint John the Baptist's Church : ウィキペディア英語版 | Saint John the Baptist's Church
As a building Johannes Baptiste kyrka ( John the Baptist's Church) is a defunctional church in Landskrona, Scania, Sweden. Today it only offers outdoor services, but between around 1430 and 1753〔Swedish encyklopedia "Lilla Uppslagsboken" 1950's, vol 6 of 10, article "Landskrona",column 227,In Swedish "1753 började den stora St Johanneskyrkan rivas",In English this means "In 1753, the large St John the Baptist's Church began to be demolished"〕 it was the second largest church in Scania. The Church was demolished on orders of the Swedish military commendant in the town. This was due to a fear of a potential enemy to put a canon at the top of the church tower, and then give fire at the nearby fortress Landskrona Citadel. In 1933 the fundament of the church was revealed and a large Christian cross of wood was put at the location of the old altar. It has since been used for outdoor ceremonies during the summer. The former church building was located in ''stadsparken'', "the Town Park" and is locally known as ''Gamla kyrkans grund'', "Fundament of the Old Church". Towards the end of the 18th century, the new Sofia Albertina Church was opened instead. 〔http://www.landskrona.se/Invanare/Trafik--teknik/pagaende-projekt/Gamla-kyrkans-grund.aspx〕 ==References== 〔
